Modelling

A practical guide to modelling in India.

Categories, portfolios, digitals, posing and safety — everything to understand before you apply.

Fashion modelling

Fashion modelling showcases clothing and accessories for designers and fashion labels — lookbooks, campaigns and seasonal collections. Clients look for strong posture, clean lines and the ability to carry a garment so it looks its best.

Height and proportions often matter more here than in other categories, but requirements differ by client. A fashion portfolio should show versatility: a few looks with different moods rather than many near-identical frames.

Commercial modelling

Commercial models appear in advertising for everyday products and services — banks, telecom, food, healthcare, travel and more. The brief is usually to look relatable and trustworthy.

There is a much wider range of ages, heights and looks in commercial work. A natural smile, expressive face and comfort on camera count for more than runway measurements.

E-commerce modelling

E-commerce shoots produce the product images you see on shopping apps and websites. They are fast, high-volume and highly consistent: the same poses repeated across dozens or hundreds of outfits in a day.

Strong e-commerce models hit marks precisely, change quickly, keep energy steady and take direction calmly. Stamina and reliability are what get you rebooked.

Catalogue modelling

Catalogue work is similar to e-commerce but often more styled — printed or digital catalogues for apparel, home, jewellery and retail brands. Expect clean, friendly poses that show the product clearly.

Editorial modelling

Editorial modelling tells a story for magazines, fashion publications and creative projects. It is more expressive and conceptual, and photographers may push you towards unusual poses or moods.

Editorial images can lift a portfolio significantly, but the work is often driven by creative vision rather than commercial requirements.

Runway modelling

Runway models walk live for designers at fashion weeks, showcases and brand events. A confident, consistent walk, good posture and the ability to manage quick outfit changes are essential.

Practise your walk in heels and flats, film yourself, and keep a short walk video ready — many show castings ask for one.

Beauty and jewellery modelling

Beauty work focuses on skin, hair, make-up and close-ups for cosmetics, skincare and hair-care brands. Jewellery shoots focus on the face, neck, ears and hands.

Healthy skin, well-kept nails and the ability to hold small, controlled expressions are valuable. Hand modelling is a specialist niche within this category.

Bridal and ethnic fashion modelling

India’s bridal and ethnic-wear industry is enormous — lehengas, sarees, sherwanis, festive and wedding collections. These shoots call for grace, comfort in heavy garments and jewellery, and expressions that suit celebration and heritage.

Learning to drape, move and pose naturally in traditional wear is a real advantage for this category.

Lifestyle modelling

Lifestyle imagery shows people in natural, real-life situations — cafés, homes, travel, fitness and work. Clients want candid, believable moments rather than posed perfection.

Portfolio preparation

A starter portfolio does not need to be expensive. Begin with strong digitals, then add a small number of quality images from shoots that match the work you want.

  • Quality over quantity — 8 to 15 strong images is better than 50 average ones.
  • Show range: close-up, full-length, smiling, neutral, and at least one styled look.
  • Keep images current. Update them when your hair, weight or look changes significantly.
  • Put your strongest image first.

Model digitals and natural-light photographs

Digitals (or “polaroids”) are simple, unedited photos that show exactly how you look today. Casting teams rely on them more than styled images.

  • Natural daylight, facing a window, against a plain wall.
  • Fitted, simple clothing — black or white works well.
  • Minimal or no make-up, hair tied back or neat.
  • Face front, side profile, three-quarter, full-length front and side.
  • No filters, beauty apps or heavy retouching.

Posing and expressions

Good posing comes from awareness of angles, posture and small, deliberate movements. Practise in front of a mirror and on camera.

  • Keep weight on one leg and create gentle angles with arms and shoulders.
  • Move slowly between poses so the photographer can capture each one.
  • Use your eyes — expression starts there, not just with the mouth.
  • Build a small set of reliable expressions: neutral, soft smile, full smile, intense.

Photoshoot preparation

Arrive rested, hydrated and on time. Confirm the call time, location, contact person and what to bring the day before.

  • Clean, moisturised skin and tidy nails.
  • Neutral undergarments and a basic kit: nude and black, simple heels and flats.
  • Snacks, water and a phone charger.
  • Ask questions before the shoot, not during a take.

Beginner modelling guidance

Everyone starts somewhere. Focus on learning, reliability and professional communication — these matter as much as your look.

Be realistic and patient: building a career takes time, and no agency can guarantee work or selection. Be wary of anyone who promises otherwise.

Casting preparation

Read the brief carefully and send exactly what is requested, labelled clearly. At in-person castings, bring printed or digital photos, wear simple clothing and be ready to walk or pose on request.

Keep your messages short and polite, and follow up only once if you do not hear back.

Professional conduct and safety

Professional conduct means punctuality, respect for the crew and clear communication. Safety means never compromising your comfort or wellbeing.

  • Get assignment details — client, location, timings, payment and usage — in writing.
  • Never share identity documents with unverified contacts.
  • You may decline any outfit, pose or situation that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Applicants under 18 must always be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Be cautious of anyone asking for payment in exchange for guaranteed work.
