Acting
On screen, on stage and behind the mic.
Film, web, commercials, theatre, hosting and voice — and how to prepare headshots, self-tapes and showreels.
Film and television acting
Film and TV roles range from leads to supporting characters, day players and featured background. Screen acting is intimate — the camera picks up small changes in thought and expression, so less is often more.
Television schedules can be fast, with many scenes shot in a day. Learning lines quickly and staying consistent across takes is essential.
Web series
OTT platforms have created many roles for new and diverse faces. Web series often favour naturalistic performances and actors who feel real rather than theatrical. Regional-language series are a growing opportunity.
Short films
Short films are an excellent way to gain on-set experience and footage for a showreel. Work with committed filmmakers, agree on credit and footage access in writing, and treat each project professionally.
Advertising and commercials
TV commercials and digital ads are fast-moving, well-paid work for many actors. Casting teams look for a specific “type” and a natural, likeable screen presence. Expect brief, energetic auditions — sometimes just an introduction and a few reactions on camera.
Theatre
Theatre builds discipline, voice, movement and the ability to sustain a character. Many respected screen actors trained on stage. Workshops and community productions are a great starting point.
Music videos
Music videos combine performance with movement and visual storytelling, often without dialogue. Comfort with dance or choreography helps, as does strong expressive acting through the eyes and body.
Presenter and hosting opportunities
Anchors and hosts work across live events, brand shows, YouTube channels and television. Clear diction, confidence, quick thinking and warmth with an audience matter most. Record a short hosting reel in each language you are comfortable presenting in.
Voice-over and dubbing
Voice-over covers commercials, narration, animation, e-learning and IVR. Dubbing adapts films and series into other languages and requires precise lip-sync and emotional matching.
A clean demo recorded in a quiet room, showing two or three different tones, is the starting point.
Actor headshots
A headshot should look like you on your best ordinary day. Casting directors want to recognise you when you walk in.
- Eye-level, chest-up framing with your eyes in sharp focus.
- Soft, even light; plain or softly blurred background.
- Minimal styling and solid-coloured clothing.
- One commercial (warm, smiling) and one theatrical (neutral, serious) option.
Self-tapes and audition preparation
Many first-round auditions are now self-tapes. A clean, well-lit tape lets the casting team focus on your performance.
- Frame from mid-chest up, camera at eye level, phone in landscape.
- Face a window or soft light; avoid backlight and busy backgrounds.
- Use a reader off-camera, positioned beside the lens.
- Begin with a short slate (name, height, city) only if requested.
- Learn the lines well enough to be free in the scene, and make a clear choice about the character.
Showreels
A showreel is a short edit of your best on-screen work — ideally 60 to 120 seconds. Lead with your strongest clip, keep each scene brief and focused on you, and update it as you book better work. If you have no footage yet, a self-shot scene can stand in.
Dialogue delivery
Strong dialogue delivery comes from understanding what your character wants, not from memorising tone. Read the full scene, know who you are speaking to and why, and listen to your scene partner.
Work on clarity in every language you list on your profile, including Hindi, English and your regional languages. Avoid overacting — trust the camera to pick up your thoughts.
